Preparation is part of the journey. Use this starting point for a conversation with your guide and a qualified travel-health professional.
Respect the altitude.
Kilimanjaro reaches 5,895 metres. Relative oxygen availability decreases significantly with altitude. Fitness does not remove altitude risk. Discuss an appropriate itinerary and acclimatisation plan with your guide, and seek individual advice from a qualified clinician before travel. Tell your guide promptly if you feel unwell; never push on because of a summit target. This page is general preparation information, not medical advice.
Pack with purpose.
Ask your guide for a route-specific equipment list and clarify what is supplied or available to hire. Test your equipment before departure.
- Clothing: moisture-wicking base layers, warm insulation, waterproof outer layers, warm hat and gloves.
- Footwear: broken-in hiking boots, suitable socks and comfortable footwear for camp.
- Camp: a sleeping system suitable for the conditions specified by your guide.
- Essentials: a headlamp and spare power, sun protection, water containers, daypack and personal items agreed with your guide.
Pole pole. Slowly, slowly.
Pole pole means slowly, slowly in Swahili. Allow time to enjoy the landscape, practise sustained walking before your trip, and discuss the daily routine with your guide. Your plan should leave room for changing weather and individual needs.
